As the alarm went off, everyone heads
for duck, cover, and hold. Evacuation proceeded, towards the designated
assembly point. Finally, the roll call and evaluation of casualties were
executed.
People from different parts of the
Philippines take part in the National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) that
is held quarterly. These quarterly drills seek to promote disaster awareness
and preparedness among Filipinos.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction
and Management Council (NDRRMC) conducts certain drills in preparation for
numerous earthquakes happening in the Philippines especially ‘The Big One’
where the possibility of a 7.2 magnitude be generated by the 100km West Valley
Fault. Once these earthquakes strike, there is a huge chance of destruction of
properties and even worse, loss of lives. That is why practicing such safety measures is a must.
We can’t stop the forces of nature to
strike but with great preparedness, we can arm ourselves from natural
disasters. Safety is on the hands of the prepared. No lives would be lost and
waste, not much casualties can be encountered, only if there is disaster
awareness and preparedness.
